The Buddha said that monks who live far away from others, in remote places, unless they’ve liberated their hearts, cannot really be seen as dwelling in solitude because they have craving as their companion (SN IV 36; Excursions into the Thought-World of Pali Discourses, Analayo)

well, this was seeing how the mind-body would be for 3 weeks secluded from anything sweet to eat – fourth week I found some old tapioca mix in the cabin cupboard – but mostly it was lentils, seaweed, popcorn, quinoa, tahini and crackers, green and herbal tea, coconut oil – mostly keeping eating as an a.m. activity

–this post was originally for Robert Kull as aid to our dialogue on wilderness retreats and how one in particular for me, led to strong monastic aspiration. I highly recommend his book, Solitude: Seeking Wisdom in Extremes, A Year Alone in the Patagonia Wilderness. http://www.bobkull.org/
